Terwijl Australische banken steeds meer inzetten op digitale transacties, verdwijnen tegelijkertijd in het hele land steeds meer geldautomaten en bankfilialen. Uit een analyse van The Daily Telegraph bleek dat bijna 460 bankfilialen in het hele land de afgelopen jaren zijn gesloten en dat er in 2020 ongeveer 3800 actieve geldautomaten zijn verwijderd, wat neerkomt op meer dan een derde van alle bestaande geldautomaten in het land.
New South Wales is het hardst geraakt en heeft nu 140 banken minder. Bijna 300 buitenwijken hebben geen enkele geldautomaat om geld op te nemen. Een soortgelijke ontwikkeling doet zich voor in Victoria, waar 120 vestigingen permanent hun deuren hebben gesloten voor klanten.
