Facebook lifts ban on neo-Nazi Azov Battalion (reports)

Despite remaining on Facebook’s harshest “Tier 1” blacklist of groups alongside Islamic State and the Ku Klux Klan, the platform will reportedly temporarily allow praise for the neo-Nazi Azov battalion “for their role in defending Ukraine.” (The Intercept)

The battalion of Ukraine’s National Guard will still not be allowed to use Facebook for recruitment or statements, causing confusion over the censorship policy, according to moderation researcher Dia Kayyali.

“It’s typical Facebook,” she said. ““I do think it is a direct response to US foreign policy. That has always been how the … list works”, citing their permission for users to post “Death to Khamenei” last summer as an example.
